CHANNEL 8 NEWS ANCHOR AND HOST STEVE MINICH SIGNS-OFF
Maine broadcaster to retire after 40 years
PORTLAND, ME, February 27, 2024 – Viewers have welcomed Steve into their homes for decades and this week, Anchor and Host Steve Minich signs off. While his broadcast tenure included stints in Florida and Ohio, Steve has called Maine and Channel 8 his home for more than 32 years.
“Maine viewers have watched this award-winning journalist for decades,” said Dave Abel, WMTW President & General Manager. “He’s kept the tried-and-true professionalism on the anchor desk and let loose with adventure-filled excursions in the field. He offered new discoveries from, what seems like, every part of Maine and showcased contemporary or traditional creations and hidden gems. He led us all to each Hometown Maine and showed us all what is Made in Maine. Steve gave us all Total Maine and a legacy that will endure.“
“He delivered the final story of Channel 8 on Mt. Washington and years later introduced our new 5pm newscast,” said News Director, Amy Beveridge. “Steve has covered thousands of stories from every angle and it was always clear that storytelling was in his blood. He has truly done it all!”
“Over the years, I have heard from so many viewers who have followed my adventures at Channel 8. My Out and Abouts, the Made in Maine and Hometown Maine features, the multitude of stories that have taken me, literally, to every corner of the state,” said Steve. “So often I hear, “You’ve seen some great places, done so many fun things,” and while that is true, the bottom line is the people. My most special memories are the many Mainers I have met along the way and the real passion they have for the lives they lead, the products they make, and how they have embraced living here as well.”
Steve has always been a mentor in the newsroom; collaborative among his crew and a giving spirit in the community. He’s dedicated his time to local events such as Tri For A Cure, the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk or the annual Snowmobile Ride to benefit Cystic Fibrosis.
His last day will be February 29th.
