Hall of Famer “Marty On The Mountain” Passes Away
Long-time WMTW-TV Engineer–and somewhat “reluctant” TV personality Marty Engstom has died at the age of 86, according to his family.
Known to many as “Marty On The Mountain”, he was a familiar face—and voice–to hundreds of thousands of people for his weather reports from the summit of Mt. Washington–and that trademark smile–over nearly 4 DECADES of service. Hired as an engineer, tasked with maintenance and operation of the TV transmitter, he was also pressed into service as a TV personality, giving weather reports from the summit. He always made a point to let viewers know that he was not a meteorologist, but rather, “just a guy doing a weather report”.
That thick Maine accent was unique and completely authentic–and his trademark grin at the end of his reports came from a directive to smile when on the air. Marty was also tasked with the operation of WHOM-FM’s radio transmitter–housed in the WMTW-TV building until a massive fire on February 9th, 2003.
Marty was inducted into the Maine Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019–and he was a legend.
