Location: Office on Portland campus with expectation of work in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston Schedule: Weekdays 9am-5pm with occasional nights, weekends
Reports to: WMPG Station Manager
STATEMENT OF THE JOB:
The Program Director serves as an integral part of the WMPG management team and is involved in all aspects of planning for the station and meeting WMPG’s long-term goals and strategic vision. The Program Director recruits, trains and supervises University of Southern Maine (USM) students and community members as volunteers in on-air radio broadcasting and audio production; manages the program schedule and makes annual changes to keep the programming fresh; maintains the WMPG Music Library; and connects with the USM community for outreach and engagement to strengthen WMPG’s relationships within USM and the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Conducts broadcast training that addresses Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules, and technical, ethical, and aesthetic skills related to conducting music shows, talk shows, and podcasts.
2. Manages volunteers to ensure the schedule functions as intended, ongoing training is provided, technical quality is sufficient, and FCC regulations are followed.
3. Complies with FCC regulations as they relate to the WMPG broadcast license. 4. Assures that WMPG’s music, cultural, and information programming remains relevant and vital to local needs.
5. Works with the WMPG Programming Committee to annually review and update the program schedule.
6. Maintains the 24-hour program schedule.
7. Maintains and updates the WMPG programming page, podcast page, front page headlines, user profiles, Spinitron, program and transmitter logs.
8. Arranges substitution and vacation programming policy.
9. Designs special programming and events to cover important historical/cultural dates and use students and volunteers to create these special programs.
10. Communicates regularly with on-air staff regarding WMPG policies and procedures. 11. Develops and maintains ongoing relationships with the USM community.
12. Conducts outreach with USM faculty and staff, administration, and students to offer a range of audio broadcast/production opportunities, and WMPG/USM partnerships.
13. Provides technical support to USM faculty, staff, and students to create audio productions. 14. Serves as a non-voting member of the WMPG Advisory Board.
15. Assists in the development of an annual “State of the Station” report.
16. Assists with the coverage of office and general operations of the station as needed. 17. Oversees operations and maintenance of the Music Library.
18. Assists in the development of an annual management plan with the management team. 19. Other responsibilities as assigned.
SPECIAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:*
• Responsibility to regularly handle cash or cash equivalents.
• Direct responsibility for care, safety, and security of minors (under 18), incapacitated persons, or persons with developmental disabilities who participate in university-sponsored programs. • Work on federally funded projects.

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITY:
• In partnership with WMPG management team, oversees and coordinates over 150 volunteers, students, interns, etc.
PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES RELATED TO JOB PERFORMANCE:
• Maintains and participates in relevant memberships/associations, such as the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.
• May represent WMPG at conferences.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:
Internal: Student Affairs, USM Foundation, Office of Public Affairs, Academic departments
External: As a community radio station, frequently interacts with the public and greater community is required – this includes donors, volunteers, community organizations, etc.

• Proficiency with digital editing, studio production and automation software. • Aptitude for creativity.


Requirements & Skills:

Required:
• Bachelor’s degree and 2 years management and radio experience or equivalent required. • Working knowledge of all FCC rules.
• Demonstrated organizational and communication skills.
• Experience working with diverse populations to make WMPG a welcoming space for everyone. • Strong audio editing skills (Hindenburg, Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Audacity). • Non-profit radio experience and an understanding of a college/community radio station environment.
• Working knowledge of the principles of journalism and the ethics of communication.
